This 'caterpillar chart' shows the 'key performance indicator' (KPI) achievement for all NHFD hospital units:
KPI 2. Prompt surgery - Surgery by the day following presentation with hip fracture
The chart shows:
1. The average and individual achievement for all NHFD hospital units, in England, Wales and Northern Ireland
2. The confidence interval calculated for each hospital based on the variation of data they have submitted
Each hospital unit is rated as:
Average - if their KPI confidence interval values include the national average, or
Below average - if their KPI confidence interval values are lower than the national average or
Above average - if their KPI confidence interval values are higher than the national average
Below average units should review the data they are providing and should consider making affected KPIs the focus of local quality improvement work.
Above average units should review the data on which this position is based, but if they are confident of the quality of submitted data then local clinical teams should be congratulated.
Average units should also review their data and strive to maintain and improve their KPIs where possible.
Notes
Only operated patients having hip fracture surgery on the day or day after admission are counted for this metric. (This is not the same as the 36 hour time to surgery target).
Non operated patients are excluded or patients where the surgery date/time is unknown.
Presentation/admission date - the date their hip fracture treatment started.
KPI value - the average value calculated for the year indicated.
All metrics are based on admissions for the year indicated/selected.
This chart is released annually and not updated. The values are 'static' and based on data entered by the reporting deadline for the period.
