News: Salford Royal Foundation Trust’s experience with the NHFD - Award Nomination
We are pleased to inform all those involved in the NHFD that Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust has been nominated for a Healthcare Quality Improvement Partnership (HQIP) award at this year’s Clinical Audit Awards 2010.
‘Salford Royal Foundation Trust’s experience with the NHFD’ is one of just three short listed projects in the ‘local improvement following national audit participation’ category. Across all categories there were 148 audit project submitted to HQIP for the awards.
The Trust has been participating in the NHFD since October 2007. Dr Neil Pendleton (Consultant Ortho-Geriatrician ), Mark Brown (Advanced Practitioner) and Chedia Varden (Clinical Audit Facilitator) are working together on the project, providing regular NHFD feedback to multidisciplinary teams across directorates.
The Trust was nominated for the award due to the improvements made around standard 3 (of the BOA/BGS Blue Book) which focuses on minimising a patient’s risk of developing pressure ulcers.
Following a presentation of NHFD data, highlighting a high incidence of pressure ulcers at the Trust, a multi-disciplinary working group was authorised by the Orthopaedic directorate. The group agreed and implemented a standard protocol which included:
·
Waterlow assessments using an electronic assessment tool within 24 hours of admission and at regular intervals
·
A management protocol to prevent pressure ulceration and mandatory referrals to the tissue viability nurse where applicable
·
Training led by the matron and ward managers of the orthopaedic directorate
·
Agreement by the working group and NHFD team to continually report and discuss follow-up incidence of pressure ulcers
In the following 12 months a sequential fall in pressure ulcers was measured. There has been an 80% reduction in pressure ulcer incidence in hip fracture patients and Salford Royal figures are now in line with the national average. The project team continues to communicate results and are planning support to new working groups to promote patient focused enhancements of the Blue Book core standards.
The award Ceremony takes place on the 27th April at HQIP’s Local Clinical Audit Conference. Further information can be found at
